Why the register has lasted so long
Most tailoring shops in India started with a long notebook: the naap (measurement) pages at the back, the order and advance entries at the front, and a slip torn off for the customer. It has real strengths:
- It costs a few rupees and never needs charging.
- Writing is faster than typing for many masters.
- There is nothing to learn.
- For a small darzi shop with known customers, it simply works.
If your shop has one or two people, steady work and few disputes about dates or money, keep the register. That’s a perfectly sensible choice.
When the register starts to hurt
Problems show up as the shop grows.
The book is a single point of failure. One spilt chai, a monsoon leak or a misplaced register, and years of customer measurements are gone. Some shops keep a photo of each page on a phone, which helps, but searching through photos isn’t easy.
Only one person can hold it. The counter needs it to take a new order while the master needs it to cut. Karigars come to ask what’s next, and someone has to read it out.
Rush season overflows it. In the wedding season or before Diwali, entries spill into margins, delivery dates get overwritten, and a blouse promised for Friday is found on Sunday.
Payment follow-up is manual. “Advance ₹1,000, balance ₹2,200” is written down, but nothing reminds you when the balance is still pending weeks later.
Customers keep calling. “Is my suit ready?” calls take up the counter’s time, and the answer means flipping through pages.

What the same work looks like in VogueDesk
When a customer walks in for a salwar kameez, you open her profile and pick her latest measurement set, or take a new one and date it. You can also set her preferred cutting master. The order holds each garment, with the delivery date and any advance taken.
Each garment moves through your stages, for example cutting, stitching, finishing and ironing. Karigars see their tasks and mark them started or done. When the order is ready, the customer can get a WhatsApp message from your shop’s own WhatsApp Business number, and she can check progress herself through an order-tracking link. That alone cuts down many “is it ready?” calls. See WhatsApp for boutiques for how messages work.
A gentle way to switch
You don’t have to give up the register on day one. Many shops start like this:
- Put new customers into VogueDesk and keep the old register for reference.
- Add regular customers’ measurements as they come back for their next order.
- If you have a lot of old entries, type them into an Excel sheet once, save it as CSV and import it.
- After a few weeks, move karigar tasks onto the assignments board.
Because VogueDesk runs in the browser, you can use it on the shop’s Android phone, an iPhone or a counter computer, with no app store download. If you want to try it during a busy month, every new account gets a 14-day free trial of Studio with no card. See pricing or read about the silai app side of things.
Frequently asked questions
Is it wrong to keep using a paper register?
Not at all. If you run a small shop, know your customers well and rarely lose track of orders, a register works. Switch only when it starts costing you time or money.
What happens to my data if my phone is lost?
Your records are stored online, not on the phone. You sign in from another phone or computer and everything is still there. VogueDesk data is hosted in Germany on Hetzner servers.
Can I copy my old register measurements into VogueDesk?
You can type them into a client's measurement set, or first put them in an Excel sheet, save it as CSV and import it in one go.
My master is not comfortable with apps. Will this work?
VogueDesk runs in the phone browser, and a karigar only needs their own task list, where they tap to mark work started or done. You can give each person a role that shows only what they need.
Is there a free version?
Yes. The Free plan is ₹0 for 1 login and 30 orders a month, with unlimited clients and measurements. Paid plans start at ₹499 a month + GST, and every new account gets a 14-day free trial of Studio.
