What GST billing for tailors needs to get right
If your boutique is registered under GST, a handwritten bill is not enough. Each invoice needs your GSTIN, an invoice number in sequence, the HSN or SAC code for each item, and the tax split correctly. At the end of the month or quarter, your CA needs those invoices summarised for the return. VogueDesk handles both parts: correct GST invoices, and the GSTR reports built from them.
This page is about GST compliance. For daily billing, advances, payments and dues, see boutique billing software.
Set up GST once
In GST settings you enter the details that appear on every invoice:
| Setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Business name, GSTIN and PAN | Printed on every tax invoice |
| Address and place of supply | Decides whether tax is CGST + SGST or IGST |
| Invoice prefix and starting number | Keeps your invoice series continuous |
| Financial year start | Numbers and reports follow your year |
| Composition dealer, rate and type | Switches invoices to bills of supply |
| Bank details and authorised signatory | Printed on the invoice for the client |
HSN and SAC codes
VogueDesk comes with an HSN master of Indian HSN and SAC codes. Each code stores its CGST, SGST and IGST rates. When you add a line to an invoice, for example “Blouse stitching” or “Lehenga set”, you pick the code and VogueDesk calculates the tax.
Garment and tailoring rates have changed over the years and can depend on the item’s price, so confirm the current rate with your CA and keep the code up to date. You set it once, not on every bill.
CGST, SGST and IGST
For a client in your own state, the invoice shows CGST and SGST. For a client in another state, for example a bridal order shipped from Jaipur to Mumbai, it shows IGST. The client’s address and your place of supply decide which applies.
Composition scheme and bill of supply
Many small tailors and home boutiques choose the composition scheme. A composition dealer cannot collect GST from clients, so the document must be a bill of supply, not a tax invoice. Turn on composition in settings and VogueDesk issues a bill of supply with the required declaration at the top.
GSTR reports for your CA
| Report | Who uses it | What VogueDesk gives you |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 | Regular taxpayers | Outward supplies from your invoices, with PDF |
| GSTR-3B | Regular taxpayers | Summary of tax on sales, with PDF |
| GSTR-4 | Composition dealers | Annual return summary, with PDF |
These reports are prepared from the invoices and credit notes in VogueDesk. Filing is still done on the GST portal by you or your CA.

Frequently asked questions
Does VogueDesk have HSN and SAC codes for stitching and garments?
Yes. VogueDesk includes an HSN master with Indian HSN and SAC codes, and each code carries its CGST, SGST and IGST rates. You pick the code on each invoice line and the tax is worked out from it.
Which GST returns can VogueDesk prepare?
VogueDesk builds GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-4 reports from your invoices, each with a PDF. You or your CA use them to file on the GST portal; VogueDesk does not file returns for you.
I am under the composition scheme. Can I still use it?
Yes. Mark yourself as a composition dealer in GST settings and VogueDesk issues a bill of supply with the composition declaration, without collecting tax from the client. GSTR-4 is the return composition dealers use.
Which GST rate applies to stitching and readymade garments?
Rates depend on whether you sell a stitching service or a garment, and on the garment's value, and they change from time to time. Check the current rate with your CA and set it on the HSN code; VogueDesk then applies it on every bill.
Can I raise a credit note if a client returns a garment?
Yes. You can issue credit notes against invoices, and they are kept with your billing records for the month.
