Odisha’s weaves and the clients who wear them
Odisha is one of India’s great ikat states. Sambalpuri bandha sarees from western Odisha are known for double-ikat conch, wheel and flower motifs. Khandua silk ikat comes from Nuapatna in Cuttack district, and Nuapatna silk is traditionally offered to Lord Jagannath in Puri. Odisha Ikat as a whole is protected by a Geographical Indication.
Bhubaneswar’s own shopping centres on the Market Building in Unit-2, a long-time hub for clothes and ladies’ wear, along with Janpath and the city’s malls. A client who buys a Sambalpuri or Khandua saree usually wants a blouse that does the weave justice, and wants it before the festival.
Two seasons, two kinds of order
Raja (June). Raja Parba is a three-day festival when girls and women wear new clothes, apply alta and play on swings. Odisha newspapers have reported crowds at the Unit-2 Market Building for Raja shopping, and in 2020 the complex was even sealed after large crowds turned up. For tailors, Raja means a burst of new outfits for young women and girls in early summer.
Durga Puja (Sept–Oct). Families buy new clothes for Puja, followed by Kali Puja and Diwali. Saree blouses, salwar suits and kids’ wear stack up for the same week.
And between them, the wedding season brings its own bridal orders.
