Varanasi gives its name to one of India’s most famous textiles. Banaras Brocades and Sarees received a Geographical Indication certificate in September 2009, covering silk brocades, sarees and dress material made in Varanasi, Chandauli, Mirzapur and Azamgarh districts.
The saree trade is visible all over the old city. Godowlia, near the Kashi Vishwanath temple, is one of the busiest markets. Chowk is a wholesale hub where Banarasi silk sarees with zari work are the main attraction, and Kunj Gali in the Chowk area, a market dating back to the time of the Raja of Banaras, still has more than 200 shops. What lands at a Varanasi boutique
Buying the saree is only half of it. Nearly every Banarasi needs:
- a blouse, often with heavy work to match the zari,
- fall-pico, and sometimes a petticoat,
- for brides, a lehenga or suit made from Banarasi fabric, with fittings.
Visitors and pilgrims who buy here often live in another city, so the finished outfit has to reach them.
